Kemp test is Basically , a orthopaedic test for lumbar facet joint pain.

Done in patients generally with lumbar joint pain.

For any neural tissue damage , you can also perform The SLR test.

Clinical Relevant Anatomy:-

The facet joint is also called the zygapophyseal joint.

It’s main function is for the load transmission.

And also it helps the vertebrae segment in flexion, extension and also restriction of axiall rotation.

The Lumbar Facet joint conatins hyaline cartilage, synovial membrane , synovial capsule.

Purpose of Kemp test:-

The purpose of this test is to assess lumbar spine facet joints pain.

This test is done to differentiate from the lumbar posterior facet syndrome as well.

Technique for Kemp Test :-

This Kemp test can be done in sitting as well as in standing.

Standing Position:-

The patient stands beside the therapist.

Then the therapist holds the shoulder of contralateral side.

Kemp Test

Ask the patient to extend , ipsilateral side , side flexion and ipsilateral axial rotation.

Then hold the patient for 3 seconds.

Seated position:-

The therapist stabilizes the lumbosacral region.

The other arm Controls the Patient’s upper body movement.

Patient is passively taken into flexion, rotation, side flexion and finally extension.

While doing extension , the pain in lumbar facet joint might arise.

Evidence of Kemp Test?

The sensitivity ranges from 50- 70% and has a specificity of about 67%.

For more accurate results, MRI is preferred.

Other test are also available for the clinicians and Physiotherapist to perform on patients.
